Early Queensland Architect William Martin Haenke began his career in Ipswich, then worked in Melbourne before returning in 1900. He made a significant impression on the local landscape through his unique approach and by introducing the Californian bungalow style to this region. Many of his buildings remain standing in Ipswich today. The charm of Haenke’s beautiful hand-drawn designs featured in this exhibition is a reminder of the talent of the architectural draftsman and the enchanting detail of Ipswich buildings of the early 20th Century.

One of Queensland’s earliest recorded Colonial cabinet-makers, George Dowden immigrated from England aboard the Argo in 1854 and began trading in Ipswich in the mid-1850s. Until his death in 1875, Dowden created fine furniture for a number of the grand residences built in the Ipswich region during the mid-Victorian period of affluence and prosperity. The significant historic pieces in this exhibition not only demonstrate Dowden’s craftsmanship but reflect the varying tastes and styles of the era.
