It’s not long until Jamboree, the modern-day mecca of drag racing, hits the Willowbank Raceway for the biggest Sports Compact Drag racing event in the southern hemisphere, with fans and racers travelling from around the world to catch a glimpse of some of the world’s fastest turbo powered vehicles on our home track.
The event is now in its 28th year, and what started as a meet for VW fans has slowly turned into the marvel today that is Jamboree. The venue is full of action, from the Show N Shine cars on display, to trader’s alley and of course the wildest imports taking on world records on the drag strip.
Jamboree caters for all ages with colouring in books, jumping castles and face painting for kids through to pit access for the bigger kids.
“We travel up from Sydney every year to see the action and show the little ones what it’s all about and they have a blast sitting on the hill watching the racing with their crayons and Jamboree colouring in book, while we get to watch the best of the best in this class of racing,” Jamboree fan Scott Clarke said.
This year Jamboree will see the 2nd fastest import in the world piloted by Rod Harvey from New Zealand on charge running a 5.70 at 265 mph last week in testing.
Harvey will go from a stationary position with a 2jz engine that is commonly found in your average Toyota Supra to over 425 km/h in just 400 metres. The car has obviously been enhanced and modified to go this fast but that’s what makes the sport so relatable.
With over 180 entrants from all over Australia, New Zealand, Japan and fans from as far as USA and Puerto Rico this event is shaping up to be one hell of a weekend at Willowbank Raceway.
