Ballroom spectacular brings visual feast
It’s not only the ballroom dancing that will be dazzling audiences when Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom The Musical hits the stage of the Ipswich Civic Centre this September.
The spectacular costumes and sets are also a major part of this show – and the Ipswich Musical Theatre Company has scored for its production those used in the acclaimed Melbourne season.
Adding to the magic of this much-anticipated show, for which tickets are selling now, is the fact that Paul Mercurio himself flew to Ipswich as casting director.
Mercurio played the lead role of Scott Hastings in the1992 Australian classic Strictly Ballroom movie, which told of a champion ballroom dancer who defies all the rules and follows his heart, finding not only his true calling but also his true love.
Strictly Ballroom The Musical had its global premiere in April 2014 at the Sydney Lyric Theatre, followed by seasons at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne and Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre in 2015. The first staging in England, premiered in November 2016 and the latest production in England opened in March this year at Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End.
Adapted by Terry Johnson, this new production introduces many new musical numbers as well as the known and loved songs from the movie including Time After Times, Perhaps, Perhaps Perhaps, Tequila and Love is in the Air.
In September 2018 it will be staged, for six performances only, at the Ipswich Civic Centre: Friday to Sunday, September 14- 16 and 21-23. Book here.
